Rhomberg Sersa Australia (RSA) was contracted to support the completion and delivery of the Cross River Rail, Brisbane’s new underground rail line.

The former Brisbane Transit Centre was demolished, and construction began in 2017 with completion scheduled in 2024. RSA was subcontracted to oversee the project management and provide the resources needed to deliver the agreed scope.

RSA Project teams ensured full compliance with the requirements of the contract with CBGU D&C JV. The tunnel will utilize the European Train Control System and Automatic Train Operation. It will be solely operated by the New Generation Rollingstock fleet.

The RSA crews successfully handled the installation of the track slab in the tunnel (2x 6.14 km) and 1 track slab turnout supply and the orchestration of the concrete placement plant.

Rhomberg has made excellent progress on the Cross River Rail. RSA purpose-built Concrete Placement Units (CPUs) have progressed progress of the track slab system. Each CPU was designed and created in-house by Rhomberg’s Steelwork and Infrastructure team. Our team members were impressed with the quality and improved worker safety improvements while using the CPUs.

Safety and efficiency are a priority for RSA which is why the team started building the specialised pre-cast track stab rail system. Starting at Woolloongabba station and running towards Boggo Road station and the Southern area; the use of specialist gantry cranes placement of the 7.4-tonne precast elements.

Excitement and morale were boosted during the construction period when the Cross River Rail Woolloongabba site hosted the Prime minister, Hon Anthony Albanese, who was joined by Minister for the Olympics, Deputy Premier Steve Miles, Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey, Federal Member for Moreton Graham Perret and CRRDA CEO Graeme Newton.

The Cross River Rail Project’s new convenient rail line will create five new inner-city station precincts and increase the overall capacity of the rail network.
